EXCLUSIVE UPDATE: Charlie finds his way home
Charlie has been reunited with his family and puppies.
The pleas of the Smit family and the search for their lost dog, Charlie, have not been in vain.
Charlie was reunited with his family last Friday.
Tears of joy, laughter and sloppy kisses were in abundance as the young basset hound was not only reunited with his loving owners, but also met the pups he sired for the first time.
The Smit family thanked the community, who assisted in helping to return Charlie home.
“It was like a game of chase; we were always trying to follow leads. Eventually someone told us they had seen a dog like Charlie in Dannhauser.”
The Muthan family of Dannhauser had in fact rescued Charlie after they spotted him near death approximately two weeks after the Memel Walk.
Trevor Muthan’s wife, Subashnie Kamal said the family had grown extremely attached to Charlie in the time he had stayed with them.
“When we found him, he had been in a bad state. I bought medication for him and we treated him as best we could,” she recalled.
The Muthan’s daughter, Sharanya, was in tears when the Smit family arrived to take Charlie home, but the Smits had a surprise for the young girl, as they handed her a young basset hound pup of her own from the litter Charlie had sired earlier this year.
“She absolutely loves the pup and I can’t thank the Smits more for this gift,” said Mrs Kamal.
The Smits also felt indebted to Sugnet Roets, a Newcastillian who made the search for Charlie her own.
Ms Roets kept social media sites alive in her quest for Charlie, posting on every site possible, as she helped in the search.
“I have a basset hound of my own. I could only imagine what the family must have felt when Charlie went missing. I wouldn’t want that on anyone, which is why I had to help,” said Ms Roets.
Today, Charlie is the happy father of four pups.
They snuggle up to him as they fall asleep every night.
Although he was missing for quite some time, Charlie is still as adventurous as ever, and roams around on the Smit’s farm, confident in the belief that no matter what, he will always find his way home.
