Patel sisters aiming to resurrect a passion for books
Through literature, they hope to create a positive environment where children can learn that their dreams can come true.
In a digital world where cellphones and computers reign, Haseena and Shameema Patel are looking at resurrecting a passion for books.
The two sisters are planning to start a book exchange club, where people of all age groups can swop books at no cost.
“Going to the library can be difficult at times and one does not always have time to return the books on the due date. Through the book club, the book will essentially be that person’s until they are ready to exchange it for another,” explained Haseena, who hoped the club would teach children to take pride in books.
Shameema said as there were no place in town to exchange books, the idea would be something new for Newcastle and will get people reading. “All we ask for is books in a good condition.”
“At the moment we are looking for premises, books and shelves where we can hold the club,” said Shameema.
The sisters said they would be happy with small, central premises, accessible to everyone.
“We would like to see it grow to such an extent that we could help children learn how to read and possibly have times where stories could be read to children,” Shameema said.
The sisters belong to Leave No Girl Behind International (LNGBI), an organisation dedicated to empowering girls and women.
Through literature, they hope to create a positive environment where children can learn that their dreams can come true.
If anyone would like to assist in the creation of the book exchange club, they can contact Shameema on 072 271 4040 or 034 317 2151.
