No water as pipe along main line bursts
In order to fix the main line, they had to shut down the plant
Observation Hill and Hospital Park residents were without water for hours on Tuesday, with some areas having to wait until after midnight before their water supply returned. People were demanding to know what the reason for the outage was, and were not happy about the fact that no water tanks were sent out to the affected areas.
“I had to battle with my little children and to cook for the family. uThukela should at least have given us notice so we had time to prepare,” said one furious mother.
According to uThukela, there was a pipe burst in the main line which supplies water to Modelkloof, Steadville and other areas in town, as well as areas out of town. In order to fix the main line, they had to shut down the plant. The whole system had to be drained, which consists of 22 million litres of water, and it took five hours for the reservoir to fill up again.
“I would like to thank the community for being understanding while we were busy fixing the pipe,” said deputy water operations manager Mr Glen Singh. He further assured the community that a burst of this nature very rarely occurs.
