Councillor tackles unsightly sight
Cllr Shunmugam explained during the past months he had numerous complaints from residents regarding the dirty issue and is now appealing to the community for their cooperation.
Dirt is strewn across the street, rodents and dogs have munched through the garbage- what is left is a dirty suburb.
This has become somewhat of a common sight in many suburbs of Newcastle.
Be it because the neighbourhood dogs rummaged through it for a smelly treat, or the weird and wonderful weather patterns scattered dirt around for the world to see, Portfolio Councillor of Human Settlements Matthew Shunmugam seems to have found the cause.
“Simply put, people are leaving their garbage bags out too early in the week. Dogs get into it and it leaves an unsightly mess,” he said.
He advised residents to put out their trash bags only on the morning it is due to be picked up by municipal workers.
“Residents pay for these services, it is only right that they use it properly and not inconvenience others.”

Furthermore, he believed Council would have to reconsider policies and by-laws regarding refuse removal to ensure residents use the service responsibly.
