It would seem the hawkers’ shelters situated along Hathorne Street are nothing more than a white elephant.

Ferdie Alberts, Local Economic Director, said the delay in the opening of the shelters was not without explanation.
“There were some snags with the project, ranging from one of the contractors who died, to some changes in specifications and the vandalising of some of the assets.”
Mr Alberts said despite the delays, there was light at the end of the tunnel and the municipality had already advertised the stalls for prospective vendors. “We are currently finalising outstanding issues and we hope that the project will be complete by the middle of February. We will concentrate on vendors from Ward 3, but it will not be restricted to Ward 3 alone.”
He explained hawkers would be selected by a committee appointed by the hawkers in conjunction with municipal staff, and the criteria to be used would include the products to be sold at the stands.
