Dirty water in Bergville
Parents were worried about their children, wondering if the tap water would make them sick if they drank it
Bergville residents were furious when they were faced with dirty water coming out of their taps for two days during the course of last week.
It’s obviously not pleasant to get home from work and be greeted by discoloured, filthy-looking water. This resulted in people having to go to nearby shops to buy water to drink and cook with.
Parents were worried about their children, wondering if the tap water would make them sick if they drank it.
Many feared picking up cholera by drinking the dirty water coming out of the taps.
“How can uThukela deliver such filthy water to the community? How do they expect us to survive when we can’t do basic household chores?” said an outraged resident.
Discolouration of water can range from a light, straw-yellow colour to dark-brown. It can be caused by a number of things, including naturally occurring substances, disturbance of mains deposits, corrosion of service pipes and internal plumbing issues.
At the time of going to press, uThukela District Municipality had not commented on the matter.
