Fed up with the tall, grass and reeds growing along the banks of Ncandu River on Finnemore Street in Paradise, a resident decided to enlist the help of gardeners.
The resident, who asked to remain anonymous, explained he had raised the problem of the exceedingly tall overgrowth several times with municipal officials.
“They just promise us they will do something, but they aren’t doing anything at all.”
The resident believed the overgrowth was so thick in the area, it gave criminals a place to hide, and provided the ideal place to stash loot.
Impatient about the municipality’s lack of action, the resident hired the services of a private gardening company to clear the area at his own cost.
In a recent public meeting, the issues surrounding grass cutting in these areas were brought up.
Ward 4 Councillor, Tanya De Jager, said she had brought the issue to the municipality’s attention.
Democratic Alliance Community Services Councillor, Bebsie Cronje explained with areas near the river, the vegetation fell into two groups, the area that would be tackled by the municipal grass cutting programme, and the second would be tackled by the municpal’s Ncandu River clean up.
Mayor, Afzul Rehman, admitted in EXCO recently that the municipality was finding it hard to keep up with the grass cutting schedule, because of the summer rains, and the exponential growth rate of the vegetation this year.
“We ask the community to bear with us. We will handle it; it is just proving to be difficult to handle at the moment,” he concluded.
