Saving future health, from today

During the four-day programme, the DoH also promised to set up a mobile clinic for tests such as cholesterol, pap smears, prostate screenings and family planning.

“HIV and its effects don’t get enough exposure.”

This simple statement encompasses one of the primary reasons Phumula Nathi Motel has invested so heavily into its Wellness and HIV Awareness Week programme, which began on Wednesday (March 25) and runs until Saturday (March 28).

Motel representative, Arthi Singh explained the main focus was wellness.

However, the event is more than simply promoting well being, but also raising awareness on the reality of HIV, in particular for nearby rural communities who do not have access to vital information.

For this reason, Phumula Nathi has partnered with the Department of Health and Newcastle Community Radio.

“We have been in contact with DoH managers – the statistics they have revealed are shocking.”

Ms Singh added the motel had taken a collective decision to make a stand, based on the idea that even one life changed through the programme was motivation enough.

Educating a community was something all spheres should be a part of, she continued.

She described the Wellness and HIV Awareness Week as an opportunity for Newcastillians to learn how to care for themselves, promoting good lifestyle for future generations too.

“We want people to become responsible for their own health.”

The programme will feature representatives from the Diabetes Council and the Heart Foundation, a yoga expert, homeopathic gurus, while also keeping the blood pumping through spinning, gym activities, Zumba and much more.

During the four-day programme, the DoH also promised to set up a mobile clinic for tests such as cholesterol, pap smears, prostate screenings and family planning.

“The expo will also feature a host of stalls across our premises, including food and beverages.”

Ms Singh welcomed all residents to attend at no cost, and to begin playing an active role in ensuring the good health of the future.
