Head of Parks, Recreation and Cleansing, Vish Govender mentioned this in a meeting last week to discuss maintenance of the cemetery and the way forward.
An investigation has since been launched by the department into complaints about face masks littering the cemetery, allegedly part of the equipment worn by Community Services department staff.
Mr Govender felt the discarding of the masks was ‘completely wrong’.
“If it is our staff, action will be taken against them”.
Explaining the current process, he said new masks would be issued to staff by Technical Services and Community Services only if the old or used masks had been returned to superiors.
Overall, Mr Govender felt long grass at the cemetery was no longer an issue, but said litter remained a social ill to be tackled.
Municipal staff are said to be deployed on Fridays according to a set routine, but it is the onus of family of the deceased to maintain the grave sites themselves.
“We need partnership with these families, or we won’t get the cemetery to a good state.”
