Coming to the conclusion ‘it is time to slow down a bit’, the Newcastle-born businessman leaves behind a legendary legacy.
As a key player in the struggle against apartheid and figurehead in the community, there is no doubt in the minds of South Africans that Mr Maharaj will be sorely missed.
President Jacob Zuma issued a statement thanking Mr Maharaj for his unwavering service to him and the country.
“We wish him well in his retirement,” said President Zuma.
