It’s been approximately two months into the Alfred Street rehabilitation and reconstruction project. Road users have been patient, as many feel the project is a big relief for business owners, pedestrians and motorists. The rehabilitation and reconstruction of the road has been progressing well, and channeling of the road is to commence soon.

It has been made a priority to ensure access routes are not blocked and that traffic flows smoothly in all directions. “The entire Phase One has been ripped and curbing is at 60 percent. The project is 45 percent completed.

There are old water pipes, which are for very low carrying capacity and needs to be ungraded to ensure we can cater for larger volumes,” explained Municipal Manager Nonhlanhla Njoko. Lane closures have also taken effect from time to time when sections underwent construction.

Commuters are seen avoiding the area and making use of alternative routes into and out of the CBD. Road users who cannot avoid the intersection of Harding and Alfred streets do not have to expect significant congestion or delays. If any are to surface the public will be notified as to when it can take effect.

“We will publicise a notice should there be any congestion, more especially at the intersection of Harding and Alfred Streets,” ensured Ms Njoko.Contractors have ensured that very few inconveniences are caused by the maintenance of the road. Road users look forward to driving on a significantly improved road surface by the end of August at which the project would have reached its completion stage.
