Constant problem of fires in Piet Joubert Street
Bheki and his family have to fight fires till all hours, using buckets of water to extinguish the flames
Bheki Clement, a resident of Piet Joubert Street in Observation Hill, is fed up with the raging fires that flare up regularly around his home.
He says the fires break out on the Monument Primary School side of the hill and spread down to Piet Joubert Street through the fence and “run” down along all the residents’ fences in their backyards.
Bheki and his family then have to fight the fire till all hours, using buckets of water to extinguish the flames. He says it’s a scary situation, wondering if a really fierce blaze will one day gut his house. Another concern is if electricity cables will be damaged as the heat and flames rise ever higher.
Bheki claims that no firefighters are ever dispatched to help. The most recent fire was on Sunday night…
“Our plot of land went up in flames. Even the markings were burnt beyond recognition. We live and pay rates in this area, for crying out loud,” laments Bheki. His question is: Who is going to pay for the land surveyor to again demarcate the plots of land that are for sale?
