During the past few weeks we have witnessed shocking and unacceptable incidents of violence directed at foreign nationals in some parts of KwaZulu-Natal, which have also spread to some parts of Gauteng. Similar incidents had previously taken place in Soweto in January.

Fortunately enough, no such incidents have been witnessed or reported in the district.However, the UThukela District Mayor Councillor DCP Mazibuko has denounced such incidents in the strongest term possible, and has appealed for calm, an end to the violence and restraint.”We strongly condemn the violence against foreign nationals.

The attacks violate all the values that South Africa symbolises, especially the respect for human life, human rights, human dignity and Ubuntu,” said Cllr Mazibuko. UThukela District would like to reiterate government’s sentiment that no amount of frustration or anger can justify these attacks and looting of shops.

“South Africa fought against colonialism and the apartheid system alongside with our fellow Africans from the continent and the world at large. “So, as a nation let us not forget the hospitality that was bestowed on us.These attacks appear to be instigated by elements bent on taking advantage of the unease in communities to serve their political or criminal ends.

“During apartheid, Africa opened its doors and became home for many South Africans who fled the persecution of the apartheid government.”For many decades Africans fought side by side with South Africans in a war against apartheid contributing to the freedom we have today.

“Since the dawn of democracy, South Africans and fellow Africans have lived together in harmony across the country.”We call upon all peace loving South Africans to come together and not to allow a few individuals to reverse and undermine our historical achievements.

“Nothing can justify the criminal activity and intolerance that these attacks represent. Xenophobic attacks have no place within our society,” concluded the mayor. Government has committed to do everything within its power to ensure the safety of all citizens and foreign nationals irrespective of their status.
