Taking out Newcastle’s scourge
We appeal to members of community to continue working with their local police to eradicate the drug scourge that is making the future of our youth doomed
Clamping down on the drug trade and crime in general.
This is the strict message that the provincial task team and Newcastle police issued to drug traffickers, users and dealers in recent weeks following multiple arrests.
Last week Tuesday, the task team deployed in Newcastle conducted an operation in Madadeni and arrested a 24-year-old woman in possession of vast quantities of dagga.
According to provincial police spokesperson, Major Thulani Zwane, the task team had been tipped off about the women selling dagga in the area,
“They proceeded to the said house and a search was conducted,” he said.
Police officers found 222 small packets of dagga sealed in a plastic bag ready to be sold.
The woman was charged with possession of dagga and appeared in Madadeni, Magistrate’s Court.
KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni applauded the members for the arrest of suspect.
She said, “I encouraged community members to work together with the police deployed in the area by providing information about any criminal activities in Newcastle and the surroundings.”
In another incident on Monday morning, Newcastle visible policing unity and K9 unit nabbed an alleged drug mule transporting Mandrax into Newcastle.
According to police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Simon Luthuli, the tip-off from the community was key in the arrest of the woman.
“Upon her arrival at the Newcastle Taxi Rank, police searched the taxi and the suspect. Altogether 388 Mandrax tablets were found in her possession with the street value of R20 000.
The suspect was arrested and charged with possession of illegal drugs.”
The suspect was detained at the Newcastle Police Station and faced charges in court during the week.

Lieutenant General Ngobeni said, “It is the combined efforts of various teams across the province targeting the drug trade that will achieve our vision of making our province a drug-free zone. We appeal to members of community to continue working with their local police to eradicate the drug scourge that is making the future of our youth doomed.”
