CBD toilets closed for business

Left with no option but to bite the ‘bullet’, Newcastle Municipality recently announced the temporary closure of two ablution blocks in the Central Business District.

Citing vandalism as the primary cause of the temporary shutdown, the Department of Community Services said ablution blocks at two locations would be repaired within the week.

“Supply Chain Management notices have been placed at the closed blocks informing the public to use other available blocks in town. All ablution blocks at the taxi and bus rank in town are in working order, despite the fact that they are being misused on a continuous basis which results in constant blockages.”

The blockages were attended to as and when needed, often resulting in municipal staff having to work weekends and public holidays.

A total of 10 ablution blocks are at the disposal of community, with an additional two blocks in Madadeni and oSizweni.

“I think it is a great initiative,” claimed a resident. “My only concern is that the municipality will not make temporary provisions for those who make use of public toilets.”

The municipality hoped to foster a mutual understanding with the public, encouraging them to maintain facilities to ensure they last as long as possible.

“The public is requested to properly make use of the facilities that are provided by the municipality,” concluded the department.
