Engineering Department workers go on strike

The workers blocked the back entrance at the Public Safety offices with a bulldozer

A group of Engineering Department workers staged a strike at the back of the Public Safety offices today (Tuesday) after they say their contract was terminated earlier than it should have been.

The workers were given a 1-year contract which only lasted about 6 months before it was terminated, which seems to be the reason for the strike. The workers blocked the entrance at the back of Public Safety with a bulldozer so that nobody could enter or get out of the premises.

Many of the striking workers gathered at the roadside to demand their contract back, with employees from the Hygiene and Electrical departments also joining the protest.

The outcome of the strike is that the contractor carrying out land excavation around town has been fired, resulting in many workers now sitting without a job.

Police and Public Safety officers were at the scene to make sure the strike didn’t get out of hand.
