5-metre-long African Rock Python caught
The mayor thanked the team for removing the dangerous snake from the area and even held it in his hands
A 5.2-metre African Rock Python was caught and safely removed yesterday (Monday) in the Emcitsheni area near Ezakheni.
The Ladysmith Snake Removal team was contacted by ward councillor Mr Madinane, who told the snake catchers that there was a huge snake at Mr Kunene’s house in his area.
On arrival, the snake was nowhere to be seen – it was as if it had disappeared. Searching the area, Fanie Cilliers finally spotted it in a maize meal plantation wrapped around a stack of corn and quickly got his hands on the mighty serpent.
Fanie says that goats were near to the maize meal and it is very possible that the python was going to attack and eat them.
The python was found about 7 metres away from Mr Kunene’s house, meaning it could have easily made its way into the house. Small children live in the house and a snake of this size can pose a great risk to youngsters – it could have attacked them.
Mayor Vincent Madlala made a request that the Ladysmith Snake Removal team pay him a visit at the Town Hall with the huge snake. The mayor thanked the team for removing the dangerous reptile from the area and said he was very impressed by its size. He even personally held the African Rock Python in his hands.
The over-5-metre-long python was safely removed and relocated at Nambithi Conservancy, where it will be safe and pose no threat to humans.
