Measures boom down on rank
This week, the new electronic sensor boom gates were installed at the Newcastle Taxi Rank.
After a year of violence between taxi associations, the Newcastle Municipality has taken the next step in adding stability to the industry.
This week, the new electronic sensor boom gates were installed at the Newcastle Taxi Rank. Although not fully functional yet, it may be the solution needed to control and monitor taxis entering and leaving the rank via a licence disk reader.
The boom gates will scan licence discs issued by the municipality and will only allow entry to valid licence holders.
“Drivers and taxis will be linked and noted via the licence system, allowing us to approve and deny entry into the rank for all taxis,” said Mayor, Afzul Rehman.
There is a belief the boom gates will help to maintain balance between taxi associations, as they will only be allowed to register a certain number of taxis to enter the taxi rank..
