Postal Service delivers its response

A Post Office spokesman has denied Newcastle was affected by strikes earlier this year.

The spokesman said mail originating in any provinces other than Gauteng was not affected by the industrial action, the tip of the proverbial iceberg for the South African Postal Service (SAPO).

Payment delays, in-house chaos, all tearing the SAPO reputation apart.

Responding to a series of questions on the state and fate of Newcastle-based postal services, the SAPO spokesman admitted international mail had been delayed by the strikes.

To date, he said, operations were back to normal.

Offering an explanation to the delay in international mail, the spokesman said it was due to some employees being dismissed for illegal action at the international mail centre in Johannesburg.

“Mail processing staff have now been transferred to international mail from other sorting centres and operations are back to normal.”

In terms of local industrial action, the spokesman stated no Newcastle staff members had become involved, and further there had been no reduction in staff count as a result.

He added that over the long term, more plants would be implemented to improve service.

“The Post Office is continuously addressing operational problems and we are noticing a gradual improvement.”

Promising local management had undertaken to do all in its power to address service issues, the SAPO spokesman said feedback from customers in terms of improving service was welcomed.
