KZN hits a dry patch
A severe drought is currently crippling KwaZulu-Natal. Newcastle residents have been advised to prepare for the worst.
A horrifying figure; 30 000 livestock have perished in KwaZulu-Natal since news of the drought broke.
With water rationing and scheduled cuts rumoured to become compulsory throughout the province, Newcastle Municipality issued eight tips to help residents save water:
• Close the tap when shaving or brushing your teeth.
• Make sure the tap is closed after you have finished using it.
• Do not fill the bathtub to the top when taking a bath.
• Filling the bathtub uses from 80 to 180 litres of water. Shower instead!
• When cooking, do not waste water to fill pots and pans to the brim.
• Ensure leaky toilet cisterns and pipes in your homes are fixed, as this can curb the loss of up to 100 000 litres of water.
• Only flush the toilet when necessary.
• When washing your motor vehicle, use a bucket instead of a hosepipe.
The municipality advised residents to report water and sanitation related queries to its 24-hour call centre on 0860 144 144.
