Houses handed over on Mandela Day
The programme started in Ward 27, St Chad’s, where the first house was handed over to the Langa family, who were in dire need of a home
Emnambithi/Ladysmith Municipality, under the flagship of ‘Operation Sukuma Sakhe’, handed over two homes as part of an initiative for the Nelson Mandela Day programme.
Ladysmith Mayor Vincent Madlala; MEC for Transport, Community Safety & Liaison Willies Mchunu; and uThukela District Mayor Dudu Mazibuko – as well as other municipal councillors and the community – gathered for the hand-over of the houses, which was initiated by Emnambithi/Ladysmith Municipality’s OSS Section.
The programme started in Ward 27, St Chad’s, where the first house was handed over to the Langa family, who were in dire need of a home. The family of six previously lived in a shack which measured about two by two metres. This family thanked the municipality for the home in which their dreams can be realised. This was recognised after a visit by President Jacob Zuma and as an intervention by ‘Operation Sukuma Sakhe’ and Mandela Day.
Another home was handed over to the Mbongwa family of Emcitsheni (Ward 7) in celebration of the lives of the quadruplets born to the family in 2012.
Mayor Madlala addressed the people gathered at the event, saying that every day should be a Mandela Day in helping others.
District Mayor Mazibuko urged the Mbongwa family to enrol their children at a crèche as soon as possible, as education is the key to their success.
The family thanked the government for taking care of them, as well as the community and municipality for helping them.
The Mbongwa family was one of the families identified last year on Mandela Day after numerous visits by the OSS team.
The family was blessed with quadruplets and the house they had been living in was too small. Hence the intervention of a new home. “Commemoration of Mandela Day through doing good for others will remain crucial in uplifting the less fortunate South African communities. It belongs to everyone and can take place anywhere, at any time. We urge everyone to find inspiration for their contribution in the legacy of Nelson Mandela and to serve their fellow humans every day.” said MEC Mchunu.
