Campaign to fight TB in Colenso
The purpose was to inform the community about the signs and symptoms of TB for early detection
The Department of Health, together with Emnambithi/Ladysmith Municipality’s ‘Operation Sukuma Sakhe’ division, carried out a door-to-door TB (Tuberculosis) campaign in the Inkanyezi area of Colenso recently.
The campaign took place on Tuesday last week, beginning at the Colenso Clinic.
Due to the four alarming TB deaths in the area, government stakeholders felt compelled to hold this campaign. This was achieved by nurses carrying out tests at the Colenso Clinic and then going door-to-door, taking cough samples.
The campaign started with Sister NF Mtshali providing health education to those in attendance at the clinic.
The purpose was to inform the community about the signs and symptoms of TB for early detection.
This included other stages of treatment if already with the virus, depending on how bad the person’s condition is.
The Colenso Clinic staff were assisted by CCGs (Community Care Givers) from Ward 5 and two ward committee members who, together, visited 70 households.
The samples were then taken to Ladysmith Provincial Hospital for testing.
After hearing about the campaign, Colenso businessman Mr Abdul Kader Parak and his daughter Maymoona Parak showed their support and generosity by sponsoring the team with food.
