Fat removed from manhole in CBD

Thukela Ladysmith Superintendent Dennis Combrinck, together with Project Manager Cobus Vos from Durban, removed a pile of fat from a manhole at the intersection of Queen and Forbes Street recently.
The fat was clogging the manhole.
uThukela’s Mr Combrinck says the removal of fat is an expensive undertaking that wouldn’t be necessary if businesses invested in grease traps.
This is not the first time uThukela has had the problem of removing fat from drains; in fact, it is a common problem in many areas around town. The job in the drain at the intersection of Queen and Forbes Street took hours.
They had to call Project Manager Cobus Vos from Durban to come and assist with the operation.
Mr Vos specialises in CCTV Pipeline Inspection, wet and dry blasting, surface preparation and coatings, plumbing, and manual evacuation of pump stations.
Their efforts resulted in a huge pile of fat being lifted out of the manhole.
“Every business should have a grease trap so they can avoid a problem like this,” says Dennis.
A grease trap costs about R1500.
