IN AN urban environment, there is no need to dump rubbish, garbage, trash, waste in that environment. There are regular collections, and black bags, free black bags, are distributed to households.

But the dumping continues.

Every open space seems to be vulnerable. The one highlighted here is in Boeren Street, between West and Republic streets. There, there is an open plot that accommodates the canal which carries the Trim Park stream. Its sidewalk has become a dumping ground for nearby residents.

It might be imagined that because there are rubbish collections, there would be no need to dump rubbish.

It might be imagined that someone living in a particular street would not want their street to be a dumping ground, with wind-blown trash and the possibility of vermin, rats, cockroaches, being attracted to the area.

It might be imagined that residents in a neighbourhood would be protective of their neighbourhood, not wanting it to turn into a slum.

It might be imagined (erroneously, as it happens) that someone who could afford premium Scotch whisky would be a person of some discernment.

It might be imagined that if someone can afford to own a house in town, can afford the rates and taxes that go with property ownership, then that person probably has a reasonable good job and is thus reasonable well educated. And it might be imagined that with a reasonable education come some sense of environmental awareness.

Apparently this is not so.
