UPDATE: Eyewitness recounts wall collapse tragedy

Eyewitness shares his account of Ayliff Street's wall collapse tragedy.

“I was shocked. I first froze and then bulleted across the road, because if it had been me, I would have wanted someone to help,” said Keval Ramautha.

Mr Ramautha was an eye witness to yesterday’s tragedy where a wall collapsed on four people, leaving one dead.

Working across the road from where the incident took place in Ayliff Street, Mr Ramautha said he had stepped outside to go to his car.

“Suddenly a strong gust of wind came and slammed my car’s door. While I was checking my leg where the door hit it, I heard a a noise and then screaming.”

Looking up, Mr Ramautha saw people running towards a scene he said he would never forget; a pile of rubble lay scattered where construction workers had been working just minutes before.

“I didn’t know anyone was there at first, until I saw a hand come up from the rubble,” he claimed.

It was then that for a few seconds he froze, before dashing across the road to help.

Mr Ramautha said he aided other witnesses to remove construction blocks off the trapped, before paramedics arrived and took over.

Looking back, Mr Ramautha said the entire incident was shocking and tragic.

“It has been windy all the time and the wall stood. When that gust of wind came, it was heavy and it kicked that wall out,” he concluded.

Our condolences to the family and friends of the deceased, as well as those injured in the collapse.
