Dangerous open manhole in front of school
Educators at the school monitor the gaping hole and guide the little ones when they see them playing in the area
A manhole without a cover has been in front of a primary school for many weeks.
Residents say it’s just a matter of time before a child or an unsuspecting pedestrian falls in.
The manhole is a hazard for pedestrians and young children alike, with the latter being too curious for their own good and playing too close to the “gaping danger”.
This applies to pets as well, who could also fall in and injure themselves.
The manhole cover has been stolen – not for first time that such an act has taken place.
The staff and management of the school has made numerous phone calls to uThukela concerning this matter without much success.
The school took it upon itself to put a make-shift cover on top of the manhole in an attempt to avoid a child from falling in but this has been a futile exercise as every time someone removes it within hours.
“Uthukela needs to make this a priority because little children are playing and walking here, this could be life threatening”, says a concerned parent. Previously it took uThukela months to put a cover after numerous phone calls and this time the school is waiting patiently for them to do so.
