More bang for community’s bucks

More community input into the budgeting process.

This was a recommendation put forward by members of the Executive Committee during a special meeting on Tuesday morning.

One of the items under discussion was the Integrated Development Plan (IDP).

In simpler terms, the IDP is meant to drive the budget in respect of where money should be allocated, and Exco members want residents to have more say in where the cash goes.

“We had a discussion on the IDP and saw it was lacking,” admitted Mayor, Afzul Rehman during the Exco sitting.

After approaching the management behind the IDP, the proposal put forward was for the planning process to be broken down, and budget ‘roadshows’ to be embarked upon sooner.

“This is so that in February, we have the background from all departments, and can budget more appropriately.”

In response, National Freedom Party (NFP) councillor, Sibusiso Lukhele asked if the budgetary and IDP processes were based on current or future ward demarcations, referring to an increase in wards shortly.

“The new demarcation kicks in after the local government elections, and would have a council facing more wards and councillors.”

Cllr Rehman agreed new wards would be established in the 2016/2017 year.

“At the moment, when the budget goes to council, they can still consider additional projects. The new council can then amend the budget.”

With no further objections, the seated Exco members approved and seconded the proposal, with dates of roadshows to be announced in coming months.
