Baby J: Will the questions go unanswered?

Baby Joshua’s story is one that will not be soon forgotten.

The now 8-month-old tot contracted a life-threatening viral infection in May, 2015. Rumours were rife and accusations of apparent medical negligence soon surfaced.

Following the publication of the initial article, Ms van Tonder decided to take steps to address her son’s alleged ill treatment at Newcastle Provincial Hospital.

She previously stated she was outraged by the manner in which Joshua was treated and questioned why the attitude of ‘so-called professional nurses’ was so lacklustre.

Her allegations fell on deaf ears for months, until the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health contacted her last month. The head of the medical board requested to meet with her in person and claimed baby J’s case was under investigation.

The Newcastle Advertiser recently received confirmation that representatives from the department had met with Ms van Tonder.

The meeting took place at the provincial hospital last week. However, the outcome of the discussions is yet to be disclosed.
