Were you among the residents who received an SMS from the Municipality on Tuesday?
Somewhat ahead of schedule, consumers have reported getting a message from the Municipality, reminding them to pay their account by the seventh of each month.
“Electricity disconnection notice will be issued if no payment was received.”
Community members including representatives of the Newcastle Ratepayers Association (NRA) have expressed outrage at the messages, stating they felt insulted.
“The Municipality should rather target payment defaulters directly.”
The SMSes, and a host of other matters raised by residents and the NRA, were addressed in an email to the Municipal Communications Department, which is expected to respond urgently.
