Hell-bent to make a difference, a community is determined to clamp down on crime.
While addressing Utrecht residents on behalf of the Department of Social Development, KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Health, Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo lauded the greater community on providing police with crucial tip offs. Several recent tips have resulted in numerous arrests, including that of a suspected drug mule en route to Madadeni from Gauteng.
Last month alone, 250 arrests were made by Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences units across the province; a mammoth task that would have been impossible without the assistance of those willing to blow the proverbial whistle.
Dr Dhlomo explained fighting crime should not be the sole responsibility of security agencies.
”While we are happy more of our community members are working with the police in identifying and fighting crime, we wish to encourage more people to come forward and assist the police by reporting these crimes in order to prevent, control and combat crime in our society,” concluded Dr Dhlomo.
Residents are advised to report criminal activity via the emergency line, 10111. Alternatively, residents can submit their concerns in writing at the crime boxes at Pick n Pay outlets across Newcastle.
