Alfred Ndlovu, a man whose smile is his wealth

In the pursuit of happiness, people are often caught up in materialism.

Despite having a roof over our heads, comfortable beds to sleep in, daily meals and the love of family and friends, we still find room to complain.

Alfred Ndlovu is a man society can learn from.

Alfred hails from Estcourt and has been homeless for the past five years, travelling from place to place, calling where ever he lays his head down to sleep, home.

“After I finished school, I couldn’t find any work. I left Estcourt in the hope of finding a job, but things didn’t work out.”

For the past three months, Alfred has been living in a concrete pipe in Trim Park.

With no running water or steady supply of food, he survives on food others discarded.

“People often leave their leftover food in the park, which I take and eat,” he said.

With nothing to his name, braving the elements, surviving with the bare necessities, Alfred sports a smile that reflects his outlook on life.

“I have clothes on my back, shoes on my feet, a place to sleep and the occasional meal. What more do I need out of life? If I could say anything to others, it would be stay strong,” Alfred concluded.
