Allegedly, a motorist travelling in a bakkie attempted to do a U-turn, when a truck travelling towards Ladysmith collided with the bakkie.

ER24 paramedics were on the scene shortly after 8pm and found the bakkie partially wedged beneath the truck.

While paramedics were able to immediately extract one of the occupants out of the bakkie, his vital signs deteriorated and paramedics initiated CPR.

He was declared dead after emergency personnel were unable to revive him.

The fire and rescue services used hydraulic rescue equipment to free the second occupant. He was stabilised and rushed to Madadeni Provincial Hospital. He is in critical condition.

Investigations into the matter continue.
