Shoprite burglary – thieves used explosive device to access safe

Thieves are getting more brazen at the festive season looms...

There has been an update on the Shoprite ‘bomb scare’ saga.  Police said thieves had broken into the supermarket last night and used a bomb to blow down a wall and gain access to the safe.

A substantial amount of cash was stolen, it was said.  Thieves apparently managed to gain access to the premises at around 10pm on Saturday.

Earlier, it was thought that there had been a bomb scare at Shoprite. Police explosive experts were  on the scene this morning.

It was also said that an early morning jogger had found 45 rounds of R5 ammunition and an explosive device on the Vryheid road, past Talana Museum.  He reported the find to the police who are in possession of the ammunition and device.  It is not clear if the two incidents are linked.
