Prostitution, overgrown grass, pollution and now illegal dumping. This is what a couple in Heritage Road has had to put up with for years and after last Tuesday’s illegal dumping, Rico Vorster says they have had enough.

Tucked away in a quiet section of Drakensview, Heritage Road is not a route travelled often and thus attracts sinister and illegal activities.

On Tuesday, Mr Vorster was disappointed to see a heap of garden and building refuse dumped in the middle of a stream.

“There is life in this stream and this rubbish is choking it,” said an angry Mr Vorster.

“Illegal dumping is a constant battle in residential areas and this area is one of them, we’ve always had a problem with illegal dumping here,” he added. Previously the couple had to chase away people who were dumping illegally or meeting for lover’s rendezvous on an adjacent piece of land. The couple also came face-to-face with the threat of losing their home to fire last year.

“In December the grass behind our house was chest height and when it caught alight, our home was at risk of being burnt down and my wife and I had to extinguish the flames with a hosepipe,” said Mr Vorster.

He hopes that by thrusting the almost non-existent level of service delivery in Heritage Road in the spotlight, it may prompt the municipality to take action and deter people from dumping illegally.
