Launching HIV/Aids Forum to give hope

uThukela District Municipality held an event last week to launch the District HIV/Aids Forum at the Indoor Sports Complex. Addressing the participants, uThukela Mayor Dudu Mazibuko encouraged people to get tested for HIV, know their status, and take precautions and medication whenever necessary.

Applauding the president of the country, Mayor Mazibuko said, “The president of this country, Honourable JG Zuma, initiated that ARVs and other chronic illness medication be made available free of charge to all patients. As one of the means of ensuring accessibility and confidentiality to patients, this government is busy engaging with supermarkets to be the custodians of chronic illness medication.”

According to the mayor, prior to ARV introduction, cemeteries were always packed, regardless of the weekday. That has changed drastically. She said the only people who expose themselves to death are those who default. She added that government is aware that it still has much to do, but nevertheless much has been achieved. This includes free basic education, nutrition support, scholars’ transportation, child support grants, free medication, etc.

The mayor further encouraged members of community to practice safe sex and lead a healthy lifestyle.

She also pledged to support HIV programmes, thus ensuring a better life for all.

She concluded by encouraging the community to use water sparingly during the current drought situation.
