Celebrating 16 years of local government

The flame was handed over by Okhahlamba Municipality Mayor DT Sibeko to Ladysmith Municipality Mayor Vincent Madlala

The province of KwaZulu-Natal is commemorating and celebrating 16 years of local government. In so doing, a celebratory flame is visiting all municipalities to allow them, as municipalities, to showcase and highlight their service delivery achievements and project successes.

Emnambithi/Ladysmith Municipality received the ’16 Years of Democratic Local Government Flame’ on May 29 at the Town Hall after it had been with Okhahlamba Municipality.

The hand-over of the flame commenced at the corner of Princess Street and Murchison Street, led by motorbikes and scouts to the Ladysmith Town Hall.

The flame was handed over by Okhahlamba Municipality Mayor DT Sibeko to Emnambithi/Ladysmith Municipality Mayor Vincent Madlala.

The flame was taken to showcase municipal service delivery projects such as the link road, the E to C vehicular bridge, housing developments in Ezakheni, as well as the St Chad’s swimming pool, among others. This took place on May 30.

The main event was held at Watersmeet Ezimbuzini Hall, where the mayor and other councillors addressed the community.

As Mayor Madlala addressed community members of the mentioned areas, he spoke of how expectations of local government service delivery have increased, and that it has also become evident that the broader transformation of local government is by no means complete.

Noticeable progress has been made in improving the lives of our communities since the establishment of local government.

He also highlighted that our task as local government going forward is to work hand-in-hand in addressing the triple challenges of poverty, unemployment and inequality.

It is for this reason that, as part of the celebrations of 16 years of democratic local government and beyond, the municipality will be mobilising our communities behind the national development plan, as our collective response to the challenges faced by the communities. Mayor Madlala handed over the flame to Indaka Local Municipality Deputy Mayor Njapha, where Indaka municipality will have the opportunity to showcase their projects.
