A 33-year-old man appeared in the Bergville Magistrate’s Court yesterday (October 3) on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
On Friday, Ematsheni police were working in the area when they found the suspect in the Ezinqeni area of Mazizini. He had in his possession an unlicensed revolver and 12 rounds of ammunition, and was promptly arrested.
The recovered firearm will be sent for ballistic tests to check if it has been used in any crimes in the province.
In another similar case, a 22-year-old suspect is appearing in the Umbumbulu Magistrate’s Court today for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. The suspect was arrested on Saturday after KwaMakhutha SAPS acted on intelligence-driven information about the suspect being in possession of an unlicensed firearm at Adams Mission.
Officers searched the suspect and found an unlicensed firearm with 14 live rounds of ammunition.
The man was charged and the recovered firearm will be subjected to ballistic testing.
The Acting KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bhekinkosi Langa, applauded the officers for recovering the unlicensed firearms and ammunition. “We will make sure we apprehend all those who are in possession of firearms,” said Major General Langa.
