Elusive murder suspect leaves community in fear
He was rushed to hospital by an ambulance but subsequently died of his injuries
A community has been living in fear following a murder in September this year. 40-year-old Siphamandla Diwa Mchunu was shot in the stomach whilst visiting his girlfriend at her home in Weenen’s Mngwenya section.
A man armed with a firearm entered the home at about 7.30pm on September 17 and fired at Mr Mchunu. He was rushed to hospital by an ambulance but subsequently died of his injuries.
A case of murder has been opened but no one has been arrested and this is what some community members fear. A resident who lives in the Mngwenya area and refused to be named due to fear of victimisation, said that many people were concerned about the slow pace that police were taking in investigating this case.
“When Diwa was shot, the police were told who the suspects were but we are concerned that no one has been arrested since then,” said the concerned resident. She added that the community was fearful that the suspects were still amongst them. Why won’t the police take action? The people are very worried,” said the resident.
Police spokesperson Captain Charmaine Struwig, responding to the resident’s concerns, confirmed that police are investigating a case of murder and are following up on all possible leads that have been brought to their attention.
“At this time there is no tangible evidence that has come to light that would allow us to arrest any person yet,” said Captain Struwig in response to the resident’s concerns.
