Suspected Van Rooyen killers still haven’t met with attorney

THE suspected Van Rooyen killers had still not met with their legal aid attorney, Xolani Msimango, when they appeared at the Vryheid Magsitrate’s Court on Wednesday.

Billy van Rooyen and his father-in-law, Ronnie Lombard, were brutally gunned down on April 19 at their farm in the Swart Umfolozi area. It was alleged at the time that more than 50 shots were fired inside the Van Rooyen home.

The community has since stood united in its grief over the loss of two well-loved residents, and in the firm resolve that justice should be served, having staged marches through the streets and protests outside the court.

Seven of the nine men arrested for the murder had hoped to have a date set for their bail hearing last week. (One of the nine took his own life shortly after his arrest and the other is now in witness protection after turning state-witness.) However, Mr Msimango had not found the time to consult with his clients to decide if it was worth pursuing a bail application or not.

Mr Msimango was absent from court room during his clients’ brief appearance, having had another case to attend to in the Regional Court.

Magistrate AC Lentik explained that she had been approached by Mr Msimango early in the day, when he asked her for a further postponement in order to be able to consult with his clients. The case was subsequently postponed to October 12, and the accused were remanded in custody.

Given the opportunity to address Mrs Lentink, the accused voiced their disappointment at not having met with their attorney yet.

Prosecutor, Mthokozisi Mazibuko, informed the court that a date for trial in the High Court should be set in the next two weeks.

Investigating officer, Attie Engelbrecht, said his investigation with regards to the accused was finalised and he was ready for trial.
