A man was sentenced to 18 years in jail by the Vryheid Regional Court on Tuesday, October 4, for repeatedly raping his 11-year-old niece, KwaZulu-Natal police said in a statement.
Police spokesperson Thembeka Mbhele said in August, 2014 the man (30), repeatedly raped his niece in the absence of her grandmother in Paulpietersburg.
“The victim was coming from the tuck-shop when her uncle forcefully grabbed her to his room where he raped her,” said Mbhele.
“The victim reported the matter to a concerned neighbour who reported the matter to the police. A case of rape was opened at Paulpietersburg SAPS. The victim was taken to the hospital for medical examination,”she said.
The girl’s uncle was arrested days later after the case was transferred to the Vryheid family violence, child protection and sexual offences unit.
Commenting on the sentence, acting KwaZulu-Natal provincial police commissioner Bhekinkosi Langa said: “We will continue with our mandate to investigate thoroughly all cases about women and children abuse and send sexual predators to jail where they belong.”
