A 36-year-old man appeared in the Estcourt Magistrate’s Court on Friday, October 14 following his arrest the previous night.
At about 10pm Estcourt police received information about an unlicensed firearm in Draycott. They arrived at the specified house and recovered an unlicensed R1 rifle as well as two rounds of ammunition.
The man was arrested and faces charges of being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. The firearm will be sent for ballistic testing to determine whether it has been involved in the commission of crime anywhere in the country.
The KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Bhekinkosi Langa applauded the work done by the police working together with the community.
“For a safer province, we need to make sure that all the unlicensed firearms are seized and we also plead with the community to report any unlicensed firearms. These firearms are mainly used in criminal activities such as faction fights, stock theft, taxi-related violence and armed robberies,” he said.
