
A killer will spend the next 15 years behind bars after being found guilty in the Ladysmith Regional Court.
The crime was committed in the early hours of December 22, 2014. Ladysmith police received a call that a person was being attacked and when officers arrived at the scene, they found that a man had suffered a severe and fatal assault. He had also been stabbed several times.
The deceased was later identified as 30-year-old Siyabonga Makhwasa (30).
Police launched a manhunt for the suspect and later the same morning, 43-year-old Bongani Buthelezi was arrested by Constable MD Kubheka of Ladysmith Detective Services, who was tasked with the investigation. The accused was denied bail and remained in custody until he stood trial.
The case was heard in the Ladysmith Regional Court and was finalised on Thursday, October 13. The accused was found guilty and sentenced to an effective 15 years’ imprisonment for murder. He was sentenced to another 12 months in jail on a count of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm and a count of kidnapping.
All the sentences are to run concurrently. The accused was also found unfit to possess a firearm.
