SAPS Corporate Communication Liaison Officer, Lizzy Arumugam, said this can only be achieved if individuals and communities cooperated with the police by volunteering information on criminals and their activities, and by being-law abiding citizens.
“December holidays are around the corner, and most people will be on holiday, at Church conferences and visiting their families. Hence, homeowners are urged to take the necessary precautions in safeguarding their property and possessions,” she advised.
Below are a list of guidelines to help ensure your safety:
– Residents going on holiday are urged to report their vacant house to the local police station so they can regularly patrol the area.
– When installing alarm systems, link it to a response unit.
– Mail left at the gate shows outsiders that nobody is home. Get a friend or neighbour to keep a regular eye on your property, and to remove mail and newspapers.
– Firearm owners must ensure that their firearms are kept in a safe at all times. Persons whose firearms are lost or stolen because of their negligence will be criminally charged and can be declared unfit to possess a firearm.
– Avoid isolated ATMs and using an ATM late at night. Never give your card or pin number to anyone, for any reason, not even a bank official, security personnel or a police officer. Never accept help from strangers when using the ATM. If you are distracted by someone while you are attempting to make a transaction, cancel your transaction immediately.

– Be vigilant of your surroundings, especially when standing at robots.
– Avoid answering or using your cellphone in public, instead, walk into a shop if you have to.
– People who are travelling should avoid hitchhikers.
