Paulpiet rapist behind bars

24-YEAR-OLD Siphimpilo Mbatha was convicted and sentenced to 15 years imprisonment by the Vryheid Regional Court on October 27.
Mbatha raped a 71-year-old woman in the Bilanyoni area, Paulpietersburg, on September 12, 2014. According to a media statement issued by the South African Police Service, the victim was at her homestead when she was grabbed by the accused.
“She was raped and the accused claimed that the victim was his girlfriend,” stated the media report.
A case of rape was opened at the Paulpietersburg police station and Vryheid Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit took over the investigation, which led to the arrest of the accused, who was subsequently charged with rape.
The KwaZulu-Natal acting provincial commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa, commended the Vryheid Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit for their excellent work which led to the conviction of the accused. “I further thank all those witnesses who gave evidence against the accused,” he said.
