In an effort to rid the province of unlicensed firearms, police in the Uthukela Cluster have been making success.
At the end of October, police made two arrests.
A 22-year-old man from the Stulwane area in Bergville was one of the suspects. At about 10pm on October 29, members of the Provincial Taxi Task Team found the man in possession of a 9mm pistol and seven rounds of ammunition.
In the second incident a day later, a 35-year-old man was arrested in the Shayamoya area, Ntabamhlophe. Police were called out to a domestic dispute and when they arrived at the scene, the man was found with an unlicensed pistol.
Both suspects have been charged and will appear in the respective magistrate’s courts. The arrests were commended by KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa.
“The recent arrests and number of unlicensed firearms recovered in the province are the evidence that we will leave no stone unturned. The arrested suspects will be profiled to see if they can be linked to other cases where innocent people were killed in the faction fights,” he said.
