Armed robber sentenced to 20 years

Officer commended for his arrest of the suspect and his testimony in court

A 58-year-old man has been sentenced to 20 years behind bars for armed robbery.

Simphiwe Kunene, of Koppie Aleen, Dannhauser, was arrested in February last year after he robbed the Downtown Superette and Bakery in Dannhauser.

Armed with a screwdriver, Mr Kunene entered the store early on a Sunday morning and demanded cash, cigarettes and airtime from the staff.

A police officer, who stopped to buy bread on his way to work, realised that something was wrong. W/O Goqo entered the store and after a struggle with the robber, managed to apprehend him. The cash, airtime and cigarettes were recovered.

Mr Kunene was sentenced on November 11 by the Newcastle Regional Court.

W/O Goqo was commended for his arrest of the suspect and his testimony which ensured that another criminal was put behind bars.
