Dannhauser double murder case postponed to June

Both men were brutally murdered in two separate attacks in Durnacol and Dannhauser in September last year

The families of Piet Maré and Venktas Govender will have to wait until June next year for justice to be served.

Both men were brutally murdered in two separate attacks in Durnacol and Dannhauser in September last year. Mr Govender’s body was found outside Dannhauer on the morning of September 3. He had been stripped of his clothing and his stolen car was found near Mafusini.

Mr Maré was viciously stabbed on the night of September 4 while locking up his shop in Durnacol. The murders shocked the relatively peaceful town as both men were well known in the community.
He was taken to Newcastle Hospital where he died.

The trial was originally scheduled to be heard in Bergville, however, no water and lights at the courtroom resulted in it being moved to Pietermaritzburg. Four men are appearing for the murders. The trial had been sidetracked the last time they appeared in court, after they alleged that police tortured them into confessing. When the case resumes in June, the court will deal with the allegations first before continuing.
