Lovers’ quarrel ends in murder and prison time

Zanele Hlatshwayo was sentenced to eight years' imprisonment for murder and two years for malicious damage to property

29-year-old Zanele Lucia Hlatshwayo from the Ekuvukeni area was recently sentenced to a lengthy prison sentence for murder and malicious injury to property.

Tragedy followed a heated argument between Zanele and her then 36-year-old boyfriend Mbongeni Innocent Zitha in July 2013.

After the argument, Zanele left the house and later returned with a container filled with petrol. She proceeded to douse Zitha and the house, and then set them both alight.

Mbongeni died as a result of severe burns.

Zanele was immediately arrested by Ekuvukeni police officers and the case was finalised in the Ezakheni Regional Court on Monday, November 14.

She was sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment for murder and two years for malicious damage to property. The sentences are to run concurrently.

Sergeant BM Sibisi of Ekuvukeni Detective Services handled the investigation.
