Police officer faces murder charge

The policeman has briefly appeared in the Ladysmith Magistrate's Court, where he was granted bail of R1000

A 36-year-old police constable was arrested by Ladysmith detectives on Monday (November 28).

The policeman, who works at Ematsheni SAPS, faces a murder charge which stems from an incident that took place on August 27 in the Ematsheni area.

The policeman was off-duty when he was contacted by a member of the public who spotted a person selling second-hand items.

The policeman went out to investigate and is then alleged to have assaulted the person.

The man, later identified as 33-year-old Themba Hlongwane, died as a result of his injuries.

The policeman has briefly appeared in the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court, where he was granted bail of R1000. He is due back in court on January 19, 2017.

KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Bheki Langa issued a stern warning to police officers that such behaviour will not be tolerated in the SAPS.

“It is very disappointing that a person who must enforce and uphold the law is the one who is breaking it. We commend the detectives who investigated the case and arrested the perpetrator. This swift action by our detectives is once again an indication of our commitment to weed out bad elements from the ranks of the SAPS,” he said.
