More than 80 suspects arrested for stock theft

All the arrested suspects appeared briefly in various magistrate's courts in Northern KwaZulu-Natal

Over 80 suspects collectively were arrested by Northern KwaZulu-Natal Stock Theft Unit officers during a joint operation from November 13 to 25.

19 of the arrests were for stock theft.

The suspects were arrested in the Nquthu, Newcastle, Ladysmith, Greytown, Dannhauser, Msinga, Dundee, Glencoe and surrounding areas.

In addition, 65 cattle, 96 goats and 35 sheep were recovered.

The team also arrested another 68 suspects for various cases such as murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm, possession of dagga, failing to brand an animal, and possession of stolen property.

Other recoveries included 478g of dagga, a 9mm pistol with three live rounds of ammunition, an AK47 with 30 live rounds of ammunition and a flat-screen plasma TV.

The KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa, praised the team for the recovery of the stolen stock and the arrest of the suspects. “We are warning stock owners to make sure they brand mark their livestock so they will be easier to identify when lost. All those who are failing to comply with the Animal Identification Act will be prosecuted,” he said.
